Cheb Castle

One of the few preserved imperial palaces in the Czech Republic, built in the 12th century. Its castle chapel stands on the site of an ancient Slavic burial ground, where a royal wedding took place, as well as the treacherous murder of Prince Albrecht von Wallenstein's aides. The history of the castle is linked to the powerful Staufen dynasty, to which Frederick Barbarossa belonged. It was he who had it rebuilt into an imperial palace, the only one in our country.

However, due to the war in the 18th century, only a torso remains of the palace and Romanesque fortress with the mighty defensive Black Tower and the unique Romanesque-Gothic chapel of St. Erhard and Ursula.

King Jiří of Poděbrady Square, the group of medieval town houses known as Špalíček

The main town square, where there are a number of historical monuments, the most famous of which is probably Špalíček.

Špalíček is a unique complex of eleven originally Gothic merchant houses with half-timbered construction. It was built on the site of former meat market buildings in the 13th century, and you will find nothing like it in our country. Shops and businesses are still located in the buildings today, and you can walk through them via the narrow Kramářská Street.

Another important building is Pachelbel's House. The famous military commander Albrecht von Wallenstein was murdered here in 1634, and now it houses the Cheb Museum.

Unique Cheb´s roof trusses

Due to a lack of space and small plots, buildings were constructed high up, not only on the square. Some roofs are also multi-storey. Their height was intended to show off the wealth of individual merchants. Cheb timber roof trusses are unique not only in the Czech Republic, but probably also in Central Europe. The Cheb Tourist Information Center has prepared an unprecedented tour route that will take you through the attics of these town houses. In a small area, you can see Gothic, Baroque, and Renaissance roof trusses.

Cheb pedestrian zone with the Gate of Time

In the mid-19th century, the local inhabitants of Cheb were thinking about how to connect the heart of medieval Cheb with the railway, a technical innovation of the time. They decided to do it boldly. At the southern end of the square, they demolished two houses and built a new boulevard, today's třída Svobody (Freedom Avenue), leading to the railway station. During the reconstruction of the pedestrian zone (2009–2010), the Gate of Time (a 9-meter-high, 2-meter-wide artifact weighing 3.5 tons) was built on the site of these two houses. It represents the door to a house that no longer exists. The artifact rotates around its axis, inconspicuously, 180 degrees in 24 hours. At noon, the side of the artifact bearing the year 1061 connects with the timeline of the most important dates in Cheb's history.

Komorní hůrka

Komorní hůrka (Chamber Hill)

Komorní hůrka is our youngest volcano, which became extinct sometime between 400,000 and 600,000 years ago. Until recently, there was debate as to whether Komorní hůrka was a volcano at all. Surprisingly, it was the poet Johann Wolfgang Goethe who played the greatest role in proving the volcanic origin of Komorní hůrka. In addition to poetry, he was also passionate about geology

and the study of nature. It was he who suggested digging inside to find out the truth. Today, Komorní hůrka is a very peaceful place surrounded by greenery, and the mining pit in particular has become an important botanical site. There is a short nature trail around the volcano.

Jesenice Water Reservoir

Approximately 5 km from Cheb, on the Odrava River, there is the Jesenice Reservoir, a popular spot for recreation and water sports. In this reservoir with exceptionally clean water, you can swim, surf, go sailing, or relax under a parasol on the beach. Near the village of Všeboř, there is a largely submerged reinforced concrete arch bridge. The upper part of this bridge can be seen above the water surface.
